How to Clean a Cast Iron Pan

How to Clean a Cast Iron Pan

The most frequently used items in my kitchen are my cast iron pans! While cast irons are great to cook with and I could not imagine life without them, they can also be considered intimidating due to confusion on how exactly to clean them. Shockingly, there can be a bit of judgment that surrounds this topic. The question always looms...Do you clean your cast iron pans?... and if so, how do you clean them? While there is no judgment from me on whether or not you do, this is my simple answer. Yes, I clean my cast iron pans and here is my method.

Supplies Needed:

  • Cast Iron Pan
  • 2 tablespoons of Kosher Salt (I like this because it has a rougher texture which is good when cleaning)
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 2-4 sheets of paper towel

Directions:

  1. After cooking with your cast iron pan and it has cooled, pour a generous amount of cooking salt into the pan.
  2. Then using a paper towel rub the salt into the pan with good force. The salt should be able to scrap off any little bits that are holding on to the pan.
  3. Rinse out the salt.
  4. Return the pan to the stove top, while on a low simmer pour olive oil in to the pan and use a new paper towel to rub the olive oil all over the inside of the pan.
  5. Now you have a cleaned cast iron pan that is ready to go!

Easy Peasy! Check out my reel on Instagram to watch me do the above steps.
